Solar System Model Project

Grade Six

Due _________________

There are a couple different ways you can make a model of the solar system. Your model can be 3D or 2D, it’s up to you.

Requirements:

·         Your model must be built to scale.

·        It has to include the sun and eight main planets. It does not have to include Pluto and Eris (which are 2 dwarf planets).

·        Planets must be labeled.

Option 1: You can use a platform and display the solar system with rods

from the sun.

Option 2: You can make a poster.

Option 3: You can hang the planets.

How to build your solar system planets to scale:

3D Model Choose a large round sphere to be your sun. Measure the circumference around your sun by wrapping a piece of string around it and then measure the sting in millimeters. Divide that length by 3.142 (Pie) to get the diameter. Then use the website below to calculate how large each model planet should be.

2D Model Choose a large flat circle to be your sun. Measure the diameter of your sun in millimeters. Remember, diameter is a straight line passing through the center of a circle or sphere. Then use this website to calculate how large each model planet should be.
